This book is a fascinating read which I would recommend without hesitation to devotees of both, or either, of Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale. (I had already read every word of Mary Seacole’s engaging memoir, Wonderful Adventures, before coming to this recent Iguana production). The 248pp. book includes a 37pp. look at the Crimean War, brief accounts of MaryS over 45pp. and FlorenceN over 41pp., then a 52pp. examination of 10 myths, followed by 19pp. of passages from the Seacole book. In the important discussion of the issues arising from the contentious myths discussed, to me the book’s outstanding feature is the depth to which contemporary primary sources of supportive information are plumbed with such profound scholarship and erudition.
For the book, Professor emerita Lynn McDonald draws authoritatively upon her unparalleled knowledge of Florence Nightingale as that admirable lady was in her times. The author’s capability derives from decades of her widespread researching of primary sources for editorial compiling into the massive 16 volumes collection of Nightingale’s extant writings, now completing her Collected Works. With such background, Prof. McDonald analyses 10 common myths of wishful thinking, half-baked notions masquerading as history, which she identifies as erroneously thrust into Mary Seacole’s reputation. And she supplies telling chapter and verse in innumerable quotations from writings of the times, for the unequivocal evidence endorsing the logic which she sets down.
The author is unstinting in her recognition of Mary Seacole’s fine achievements, with appropriate admiration and praise for them. Mary is certainly portrayed gallantly while in her full flamboyance.
